about 'Tragic Tales' opening at Cartwheels Gallery
Tragic Tales is the name of the new series of paintings by local cottonwood artist Jason S. Voss. The show opens Saturday November 9th at Cartwheels Gallery from 6-9PM. Meet the artist and learn about the historic stories and people in his paintings. Featured are stories of Jennie Bauters, known as Belgian Jennie, Jerome's most famous Madame. Sammie Dean, Jerome's most famous unsolved murder from 1931.The Reverend George Harvey Brooks, who died tragically in the Cottonwood Hotel fire of 1925, who was in town for a lecture on spiritualism and played to a sold out crowd at the Rialto theater on main street. Ann Hopkins, Jerome's famous vindictive wife of Clarence Hopkins, who threw acid into the face of her husbands lover. The mysterious Lady in Red, the infamous restless spirit who haunts the Connor Hotel and Spirit Room in Jerome. Bohemia, the first female resident of Jerome to be murdered in 1894. All of these stories and personas come to life in the new series of paintings for sale. Jason also works as a tour guide for Tours Of Jerome.

Local Cottonwood artist Jason Voss has created a new series of small paintings entitled "Wicked City" exploring the town of Jerome Arizona, once dubbed "the Wickedest Town in the West." The show debuts on October 13th from 5-8PM at Cartwheels Gallery on main street in Old Town Cottonwood, across from the Tavern Grill. This new series depicts images of Jerome in the evening twilight, surrounded by a variety of images associated with Jerome. Gamblers, Gun Fights, Miners, Madames and Prostitutes, Ghosts, Death and Disease are all depicted in the series which are tied together with a unique color palette and theme of Tarot cards and playing cards. The dark silhouette of Cleopatra Hill looms in the background, as the ever present backdrop for the stories being told. Jason's unique work is inspired by his knowledge of Jerome Arizona, where he has worked as a tour guide for 2 years. His paintings depict Jerome's history
such as the burning down of the famous Montana Hotel on Feb 28th 1915 under mysterious circumstances. 'The Cribs' section, which were part of Jerome's infamous red light district, created a block off main street, when the town wanted to clean up it's rowdy reputation in 1913 after Arizona became a state. Jerome's fortune and high stakes gambling, is explored through his depictions of mysterious women envisioning Lady Fate. The woman in red, who wanders the hallways of the old Connor Hotel and Spirit Room, Tarot cards, The Stars and zodiac signs, all tied into Jerome's copper mining history.
